Above and Beyond Family Recovery CtrIOP Program in Chicago, IL
Great to meet you
Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free outpatient addiction treatment in Chicago, with a focus on the city's underserved communities, particularly on the West Side. The organization states that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay, and it offers no-cost walk-in treatment so that support is available where and when it is needed. Its stated mission is to provide dignified, evidence-based care to people managing addiction alongside homelessness and unemployment. The stated values are compassion, competence, and healing together. The center serves adults of all communities and backgrounds, with particular focus on people facing addiction, homelessness, or unemployment, justice-involved clients seeking a second chance, and people with no insurance, limited resources, or multiple prior recovery attempts. The approach is described as prioritizing self-determination, autonomy, and dignity, with clients shaping their own recovery plans with guidance from staff. Programs listed include sober support, intensive outpatient programming, outpatient programming, early intervention, housing and employment services, CRSS peer support, a program called Recovery on Wheels, and a program called Beyond Medicine. Clinical services described include trauma-informed counseling delivered through individual and group therapy focused on healing from trauma, and multiple sober support pathways including 12-step, SMART Recovery, and mindfulness-based therapy. The organization describes a holistic model in which addiction is addressed alongside housing, employment, medical care, food security, and nutrition, with these supports integrated into every treatment plan. Client reviews mention working with a primary counselor and with facilitators and instructors, and reference an alumni community. The page names Phil Warren as CEO of the organization in a client review.

Evidence-based approaches
Trauma-informed care
Trauma-Informed Care. Approaches addiction as something layered on top of unprocessed trauma, not in isolation. Pacing matters more than confrontation.
12-step facilitation
Twelve-Step Facilitation. Helps you engage with mutual-aid fellowships (GA, AA, SMART) as a recovery community rather than a solo grind.
SMART recovery
SMART Recovery. Self-management and recovery training built on cognitive science. A secular alternative or complement to twelve-step work.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention. Practices noticing urges without acting on them, building the gap between trigger and choice.
Holistic
Holistic Care. Adds nutrition, sleep, movement, and mind-body practices alongside the clinical work. Recovery is whole-person; the body matters too.
Group therapy
Group Therapy. A small facilitated circle where people working on similar struggles practice naming what is hard, hearing themselves in others, and learning skills together. The room is the medicine.
